Friday mornings in South King County (rotating between homes in Kent, Renton, Covington and Federal Way) 10 a.m. -noon

Yearning for more in-depth Bible study than can be experienced in a limited-length series? Seeking to let God's Word find a home deep in your heart and in your life? Join us for our ongoing, living-room based, small group study of John's gospel. This is a rare opportunity to take our time and move as the Spirit guides rather than as the calendar dictates. Each gathering takes time for coffee and greetings; prayer in silence, in song and in word; and an expansive period in which we listen with our minds, hearts and bodies to each word, phrase and verse of the gospel.

Whether you can only join us once in a while or would like to come every week, consider taking a taste of this special way to be formed together in the Word.

"Come Out, My People!":
A Lenten Pilgrimage

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish

Wes Howard-Brook’s new book, “Come Out, My People!:” God’s Call Out of Empire In the Bible and Beyond, explores the “two religions” in the Hebrew Bible: not “Judaism” and “Christianity,” but the “religion of empire” and the “religion of creation,” as they compete for hearts and minds of God’s people over the centuries. Jesus enters this conflict during the Roman Empire, and proclaims in his Word and life that one of these religions is the authentic expression of worship of the One he knows intimately, while the other is a demonic counterfeit. Lent invites us to reflect on how these two religions have battled in our own hearts and minds, and to listen anew to Jesus as he calls us “out” of the false world of empire and ever more deeply into God’s gracious reign.

Join us as we engage the Lenten Gospels from the wilderness mountain to Jerusalem, seeking to hear and to follow Jesus.

Session 1: The Transfiguration (Matt 17)

Lent takes us up the mountain, to experience Jesus revealed as God’s Beloved Son, whose Word leads us to life via the cross. We will explore how the two religions in the Hebrew Bible set the context for divine command to “listen to him!”

Session 2: Going to Samaria (John 4)

The first of the Lent “scrutiny” readings leads us into the place of “the other,” the people whom we’ve been taught not to include among “us.” We will listen to why it was “necessary” for Jesus to cross the divide into Samaria to heal an ancient division within God’s people, and where that leads us to go today.

Session 3: Healing Blindness (John 9)

The second Lent scrutiny reveals both the gift and consequences of being touched by Jesus and coming to see how things really are. We’ll look at how the “two religions” conflicted in where and to whom one went to hear God’s Word and to see God’s work, and how Jesus calls us to be healed of our own blindness.

Session 4: “Lazarus, Come Out!” (John 11)

The final scrutiny finds Jesus returning to Judea amid death threats from the upholders of the status quo. We will listen to how Jesus’ gift of new life outside the centers of power invites us to participate in bringing life to those people and places considered “dead” to “the world.”

Session 5: “Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matt 21)

We will conclude our journey with Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, celebrated by some as the true King of God’s people, while others seek to destroy him. We will look at how Jesus walks in the way of true divine power and rule, leading us to follow him to the cross and beyond.

$50 suggested fee for the series, but no one will be turned away for lack of money. To register or for more information, please email: info@abideinme.net.
